Pat Mesiti – Soaring Higher Pat Mesiti International Motivational Speaker gives you principles to soar higher!
Keep your mouth shut, keep your ears open, keep your eyes focused I remember one day receiving a phone call from a friend. At that time I was still suffering the effects of what had been a very public failure. My friend said to me, ‘Pat, where are you?’ I was actually all by myself in the middle of a pity party, so I said to him, ‘I’m having a party.’ ‘What kind of party?’ he asked. ‘A pity party,’ I said, ‘and I’m the only guest’. To which he replied, ‘I want you to know that you were my friend before you were famous, you were my friend when you were famous, and now that everything has hit the wall, you are my friend now more than ever.’ I want to tell you that those words brought life to me more than you can imagine. Always remember, our words need to be chosen wisely. My friend knew to keep to the rule: keep your mouth shut, keep your ears open, and keep your eyes focussed. He kept his ears open to my heartfelt cries, he kept his eyes focused on our friendship, and he knew when to speak and when to shut up. In the heat of the moment, it is not the time to speak. It is a time to be silent. When everything inside you wants to explode you will say words that can't be taken back. Learn to keep your mouth shut and keep your ears open. People will say things that may hurt you, but you need to listen not just to their words but to their heart. One of the great lessons of life that we all need to learn is this: don’t react to people’s words. Instead, we must try to understand their pain. During times of great challenge we often say things we do not mean, but people will judge us on those words. It is easier to respond to harsh words than relate to a person’s pain. It is important to keep your ears open to what they are not saying. Don't just listen to what they are saying, look at their eyes: if they are in a struggle, see their pain. Look at your partner's pain, your children's pain. Maybe it is not anger you are hearing, maybe it is fear. So often words are said and they sound like they have come from an angry heart, but maybe it is coming from a fearful heart. There is a proverb that says, ‘Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.’ Another proverb declares, ‘The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.’ Challenge Your words will bring life or death. Choose life. Speak words of life to people. And as they build their lives, they’ll help build yours.
